Goals for the New Year

Nope, I’m not going to cut back on desserts like these. Actually I am going to dive into an ocean of ice cream until 2011. I’m just not strong enough to resolve to resist such temptations.

So I’ll work on a few easier, writing-related goals in 2010. They include:

Publishing deal for TIB. My agent and I are super stoked about what’s in store for TIB as we prepare to go on submission! Hurray! I really don’t know what to expect, though (although I have hopes!), so this is a rather vague goal.

The sequel: Not sure if I should set a deadline for myself — if it doesn’t completely discourage me, it might help me get my act together. But I have (veeery) basic premise, a few exciting scenes, and a title. What else do I need? It’s practically done!

Another book: Another pack of characters are battling for my pen’s attention, and — not gonna lie — I am starting to give in. Basic goal: finish by the end of 2010.

More generally, improve. I know, that’s vague. But I do want to work on a couple things to improve my writing. Firstly, new word choice and figurative language (as I find myself sticking to same old, same old, and getting bored). Secondly, em dashes — I’m addicted — and while they’re fun in moderation, I’m starting to lean towards heavy-user-status. Thirdly, writing about things that are hard, out of my comfort zone — and out of the realm of things I prefer to read myself.

Expand beyond fiction. Right now I’m very boring; I only write fiction. But I’d like to dabble in some poetry, creative non-fiction, and maybe essay (ramble-y essays).

Blog: I do enjoy being a new member of the blogosphere – the possibilities for creativity and networking are endless! I’d love to start bringing in guest posters in 2010, expand the following a little (or a lot!), and start an interview series! Actually, I already have that interview series planned, so stay tuned…

Your turn: what are your 2010 goals?

  1. Nobody can resist such yummy ice cream. 😉 And good luck on TIB submissions!

My writing goal for 2010 is to write 500 words each day. I’d say to finish a novel, but for me, that’s too vague. If I keep writing 500 words a day, I will definitely have a novel — badly written, but still a novel — by the end of the year. :>

  2. Haha, I have the same problem with em dashes. You can totally do everything on your list!! ❤ My goal… okay, I'm just going to be straight with you, and not even rephrase it into "something I can control" haha. I want to get a book deal for AC. The end! (:

I think it’s well within your control – because you have written an excellent book! And excellent books get deals – even if it doesn’t happen in 2010, it will happen soon.

(see all those em dashes? I didn’t even realize it until I read this over…)

  3. I have something for you on my blog! 🙂
